Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary is in the area of Dong Yai National Reserved Forest, which is the last fertile forest in Buriram province.
“Tara Wiman Phrai” is a natural trail located beside of the district office, all distance is 2,300 meters for students and people who interested to use as a natural trail for study the forest conditions and ecology of Dong Yai Forest with the focus point for the route users to “know the animals, know the forest, know the mechanism of the nature”. Along the route, there are altogether 12 study points that will help the route users to see the relationship of all things in the forest that support each other and facilitate the living of all living things in this world, such as there is a light there is a big tree, rock sheds room of wild animals, Reward for help, Siamese Rough Bush pet the animal the animal pet Siamese Rough Bush as well, the power of erosion, pond is life, etc. Laleung Roi Ru forest is a suitable territory for the studying of nature with many natural trails. Inside, there is Lam Nang Rong Reservoir, which is the source of Lam Nang Rong that flows down to support the area of Buriram with many interesting plants and the large meadow, national salt lick and the artificial salt lick. Therefore, the area is full of wild animals. The place is also suitable for bird and butterfly watching. Swamp forest or Peat swamp forest is a kind of rainforest in the lowland area. It happens from the freshwater that has stayed in the swamp for a very long time until there is the accumulation of the soiled layer of organic matters, such as humus, animal carcass, debris of trees/leaves that slowly decay until it becomes peat soil or organic soil that is soft like sponge with less density but can hold lots of water and the swamp forest occurs again. The lower layer of peat soil is about 6,000-7,000 years old. The upper layer of peat soil is between 700-1,000 years old. Normally, the swamp forest occurs around the area that used to be the sea. However, in the area of Dong Yai, the prominent point is that it is the freshwater swamp forest. The mud in the peat area is black. It is surrounded by fern forest that is high above the head. It is the place where wild elephants are found to play in the water. Pha Daeng viewpoint and natural trails are the connection between Buri Ram and Sa Kaew province. It is the point with beautiful scenery and many interesting plants. There is a message to leave. When you come and visit, please keep clean and do not write on the rocks or trees. Just by doing this, we can have the beautiful nature to admire for a long time.
Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary is in the area of Pa Dong Yai National Reserved Forest, Non Din Daeng District and Pa Kam District, Buri Ram province with an area of 1,010,000,000 square meters or about 340 square kilometers. The area is divided into 2 sections with the Highway No. 348 cutting through. It is the last fertile forest in Buriram province and it is an important upstream source for Huai Lam Nang Rong and Huai Lam Plaimat. The declaration for the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary is for it to be the habitat, shelter, reproduction and other activities of the wild animals, preservation of many species of plant, and maintaining the river that supports the life of Buri Ram people and nearby provinces to remain forever. Dong Yai Forest has an area that connects with Tap Lan Forest, Pang Sida, and Ta Phraya. Therefore, the area of the forest is wide and combined to Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai Forest, the 2nd Natural World Heritage Site of Thailand. There are meadows, water sources, and salt lick scattered all around the area. Therefore, there is an abundance of wild animals, especially chamois, which is 1 in 15 wildlife reservation that is rare to find and many other important wild animals, such as wild elephant, wild ox, banteng, tiger, deer, barking deer, bear, mouse deer, palm civet, hyena, boar, leopard cat, fishing cat, monkey, and giboon, etc., reptiles and birds more than 150 kinds.
