“Pray for blessings”, we always hear this saying everywhere until it has become a signature that we pray for blessings at any temple where there is a Buddha image. According to the Buddhists’ belief and faith, the Buddha image is the spiritual attachment and sacredness that protects, looks after and gives us good fortune. As a result, the Buddha images in various temples are famous for different blessings. One of them is “Luang Pho Yai at Wat Muang, Ang Thong Province”, which is seemingly one of the largest seated Buddha images in Thailand. When people come to visit Ang Thong Province, they need to pray for blessings from Luang Pho Yai for auspiciousness. Wat Muang is located at Village No.6, Hua Saphan Sub-District, Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong Province. It is about 8 kilometers away from the downtown of Ang Thong Province to the west. You can drive from Bangkok along Asia Road to the city of Ang Thong, pass the market and turn right to pass by the front of the prison. Arriving at the crossway, turn left to the road to Suphan Buri along the Pho Phraya-Tha Ruea route. Continue driving and Wat Muang will be on your left. You will see “the large Buddha image” which depicts the beautiful panoramic view of the golden Buddha image amidst the vast green field. When you enter the temple’s premises in your car, you will not only see the large Buddha image but also other gorgeous grand architecture i.e., “the Ordination Hall Surrounded by Giant Pink Lotus Petals”, which is considered the largest ordination hall surrounded by lotus petals in the world. The ordination hall enshrines a replica of Phra Phuttha Chinnarat together with the left and right disciples and contains fine murals portraying the biography of Lord Buddha. After that, walk out to the back of the ordination hall and you will see the Thousand Hand Guan Yin Shrine on your left. The large magnificent Bodhisattva Guan Yin statue is there for you to worship. Next is another equally exquisite and remarkable architecture, “Wihan Kaeo Ratanaphram-Suwannapan” which glitters with the light that stikes both the interior-and-exterior-adorned mirrors. The vihara enshrines “Luan Pho Ngoen”, the first genuine silver Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara in Thailand. In addition, there are many ancient Buddha images and artifacts inside. Coming next is the small and large statues. For the land of Thai-Chinese deities in heaven and hell, the hell land contains 2 massive hungry ghost sculptures of both genders. There are additionally the sculptures illustrating the Vessantara Jakata, the sculptures of monkey troops battling with giants in Ramayana and the statues depicting the elephant duel between Naresuan The Great and the Burmese Viceroy. On the right side, the Fish Sanctuary is available for tourists to sit, rest, feed the fish and buy popular Ang Thong souvenirs. Walking till the end of the walkway, you will see the large Buddha image of “Luang Pho Yai” or Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin Sakayamunee Visejchaicharn. Regarding the belief of the villagers, walking up to use both of your hands to touch the tips of Luang Pho Yai’s hands will bless you to be successful in your career and prosperous in life. If you have a chance to visit Ang Thong, don’t forget to come to “pray for blessings” from Luang Pho Yai.
