Description
On the 12th day of waxing moon of the 12th lunar month to the 5th day of the waning moon of the 12th lunar month, a total of 9 days and 9 nights, are the days that people from many regions flow into Nakhon Pathom Province to attend the Phra Pathom Chedi Festival. This annual festival is held for tourists to go sightseeing, taste food and shopping at the market in front of the temple. The festival features exhibiting shops for local Nakhon Pathom products; local food, souvenirs and many other products. However, if you go to the festival and would like to go up to worship the Buddha’s relics and Phra Ruang Rojanarit as well as admire the beauty of Wat Phra Pathom Chedi…
Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratcha Wora Mahawihan in Nakhon Pathom Province is an ancient and respectable temple of Nakhon Pathom which has received great faith from the people in Nakhon Pathom Province and other provinces since the ancient times. It is one of the six royal monasteries of the highest class in the Woramahawihan classification. Wat Pra Pathom Chedi is presumed to be built in the reign of Ashoka the Great when the 9 monastic agents were sent to propagate Buddhism in the land of Nakhon Pathom and constructed the bell-shaped pagoda. The pagoda was restored several times, for instance, in the reign of King Rama IV, His Majesty was pleased to build another pagoda to cover the original pagoda. If you visit here, you will acknowledge the pagoda’s greatness that you can see from a far distance. When you walk into the spacious area of the temple, walk up the staircase in front of the temple to reach the flowers, incense sticks and candles sale point as well as the holy water point. Once you arrive at the upper level, you will see the duplicated Dvaravati-style Buddha image in the attitude of ritualizing for rain which is difficult to find. Once you reach the top, you will see the Buddha image of the temple, Phra Ruang Rojanarit. It is the standing Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara built in the reign of King Rama VI. His Majesty was pleased to assemble the components of the Buddha image excavated from the ancient temple in Si Satchanalai Town to be this Buddha image and enshrine it in Wihan Thit at the staircase for everyone to pray for blessings. Furthermore, it is the home to the ashes of King Rama VI, Princess Phra Nang Chao Suvadhana and Princess Bejaratana Rajasuda. If you walk along the outer cloister, you will find the Buddha images in different attitudes around the cloister. These Buddha images are created according to the stories in the biography of Lord Buddha. When you walk to the inner cloister, you will find a large pagoda where you can walk around its base and pay respect to the Buddha’s relics.
Having paid respect to the Buddha’s relics and worshipped Phra Ruang Rojanarit, the temple also has other interesting venues such as Phra Pathom Chedi National Museum inside the temple area which is an exhibition gallery for the artifacts of Ban Chiang and the Dvaravati period excavated from many places in Nakhon Pathom Province. It is divided into 3 sections. Phra Pathom Chedi National Museum is open daily from 8.00 – 16.30. The admission fee is 10 baht for Thai people and 30 baht for foreigners.
