If we are going to talk about the ancient remains in the historical sites across Thailand regarding their beauty and long history, the historical site that first comes to our mind is the historical Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Kingdom in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. It is the old capital of the country that ruled for up to 417 years. Accordingly, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province has several intriguing historical backgrounds and stories. The historical Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Kingdom has many temples and archaeological sites. A decent number of temples are still in good condition. One of them is “Wat Na Phra Men”, the place where tourists and photographers come to visit to experience the beauty of the architecture from the Ayutthaya period. It is considered a temple which utterly reflects the remaining Ayutthaya architecture.
Wat Na Phra Men was built in the reign of King Ramathibodi II and received the name, Wat Phra Meru Rachikaram, which was later called “Wat Na Phra Men”. The Burmese used this temple as a command base resulting in no demolishment until today. The aesthetic places reflecting the complete Ayutthaya architecture include the ordination hall where a Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara named “Phra Phuttha Nimit Wichitmara Moli Sri Sanphet Boromatrailokanat” is enshrined. At present, it is the largest crowned Buddha image from the Ayutthaya period. It is another highly-revered Buddha image of the Ayutthaya locals and tourists. This includes photographers who want to take photos of the magnificent Buddha image. Moreover, the limestone Buddha image in the attitude of ritualizing for rain from the Dvaravati period which is enshrined in Wihan Noi is one of the few Buddha images in Thailand that is worthwhile for preservation.
The best reflection of the history for later generations to study and acknowledge the past backgrounds are the historical sites and antiques. Wat Na Phra Men is thereby another archeological site with the clearest reflection of the Ayutthaya-period architecture. It deserves to be maintained and visited to pay respect for auspicious life.
Wat Na Phra Men is situated in Khlong Sa Bua Sub-District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. For travelling by private car, when you arrive at Ayutthaya Island, take the route around the city moat along Uthong Road. Cross the moat to the route to Ban Khlong Sa Bua. Wat Na Phra Men will be on your left. Alternatively, you can travel by public transport from Mor Chit 2 Bus terminal (Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak)). There are regular and air-conditioned buses to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province several times a day. This includes 1st class air-conditioned buses from Bangkok- Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and 2nd class air-conditioned buses from Bangkok-Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center- Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Or vans from Victory Monument, Mochit and Future Park Rangsit. Take the bus/van until the end of the route, then travel by motorcycle or local transport to the front of Wat Na Phra Men.
