In the study of Thai language when we were children, the curriculum included the study of various Thai literatures. Each person has his/her own favorite literature and it is believed that many people like Khun Chang Khun Phaen which is literature that originated since the Ayutthaya period. In the reign of King Phra Phutthaloetla Naphalai or King Rama II, His Majesty was pleased to collect and compose some new parts of the story. For those who would like to trace the Khun Chang Khun Phaen literature, follow us to “Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan” in Suphan Buri Province.
Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan is an ancient temple more than a thousand years old and a respectable temple of Suphan Buri Province. The temple has a large area with parking space for cars and travelling coaches to accommodate tourists. In the parking space area, there are shops for souvenirs and signature products of Suphan Buri Province. But before you go on a trail for Khun Chang Khun Phaen literature, we would like to invite you to pay respect to Luang Pho To, the principal buddha image in the attitude of Parileyyaka Forest in the vihara. The sacred buddha image is respected by the locals in Suphan Buri Province and other nearby provinces. After paying respect to Luang Pho To, walk out to the side of the vihara. You will see the cloister of the temple of which the inside has very exquisite and beautiful murals. The paintings are the whole story of Khun Chang Khun Phaen painted from the beginning to the end of the cloister which is divided into rooms with descriptions under the paintings in each room for the convenience of tourists. On holidays, a great number of tourists and students come to see the murals on the cloister. On the side of the cloister, there is an old and new ordination hall. The old one is not open for visitors. The new one is inspired by Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai Province. When you walk to the side of the ordination hall, you will see another place which is interesting and different from the other temples. It is Ruean Khun Chang, a duplicate of Khun Chang’s house from the Khun Chang Khun Phaen literature. The inside has a shady atmosphere with a pavilion for relaxation and a pool in the middle of Ruean Khun Chang. It is a traditional Thai lifted house with single floor and traditional Thai decoration. When you go upstairs, before walking around, we would like you to first pay respect to Luang Pho Than Chai for your propitiousness. After that, when you look around, the inside is divided into rooms. Each room is comparable to the museum of the temple which keeps the artifacts from the excavation inside the temple and the collection from the previous abbots. Additionally, there are pictures of Khun Chang Khun Phaen characters with descriptions in each room to let you have a better understanding of Khun Chang Khun Phaen seen on the cloister. Up to now, we believe that many of you will want to go on a trip, don’t you? Let’s go to respect Luang Pho To, view the beautiful paintings and visit the unique Khun Chang’s House at Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan in Suphan Buri Province together.
