City of the Sacred Dharma King or Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is a province filled with cultural tourist attractions, lifestyles, precious nature including many famous seas, mountains and waterfalls. They also include Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, Talumphuk Cape, Kiriwong Village, Wat That Noi Pho Than Klai and many more. However, there is one place that is known among a smaller group of people but is the location of the locals’ respectable sacred water well for a long time. It is Wat Na Phra Lan.
Wat Na Phra Lan is situated in Nai Mueang Sub-District, Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. It is a temple located in the south of Wat Phra Borommathat Woramahawihan. Initially, it was the monks’ residence in Wat Phra Borommathat Woramahawihan because the temple has no monks. The temple contains 1 of the 6 sacred water wells of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The locals in the ancient times always had the sacred water from Wat Phra Lan’s well for facial washing to chase away the manitou. The holiness of the water well spread to the cities. In the old days, people who visited Nakhon Si Thammarat often requested for the water from the well of Wat Phra Lan as souvinirs for others. Whoever drinks the water from this well will have intelligence and good fortune. Once King Chulalongkorn visited the southern provinces and stayed in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, His Majesty heard the stories about the sacred water well of this temple, then went to Wat Na Phra Lan and drank some water from this sacred well. The sacred water well of Wat Na Phra Lan was one of the six water wells used in the Consecration Ceremony for the Rattanakosin Bicentennial.
In addition, the temple has Chedi Wat Na Phra Lan with raised square base to support the low lotus base. The pagoda has a bell shape, square throne and smooth-cone-shaped top resembling Chedi Rai at Wat Phra Mahathat. The ordination hall enshrines the principal Buddha image and 2 standing bronze Buddha images. One is in the attitude of subduing Mara wearing robe and inner garment with long front pleats (Na Nang). The other one is in the attitude of stopping rainstorm covered in robe and crowned as emperor. These 2 Buddha images have existed since the 22nd-24th Buddhist Era.
To travel there, you can take the route No.401 to the city center of Nakhon Si Thammarat along Ratchadamnoen Road. You will see Wat Mahathat Woramahawihan. Next, its side is the location of Wat Na Phra Lan.
