Description
Prasat Muang Tam, a Hindu religious place created around the 16th-17th Buddhist century, according to Shivaism of Hinduism, is located on the lower plateau of Khao Phanom Rung and it is probably a community related to Phanom Rung Castle since the two castles are close to each other. The architecture of Prasat Muang Tam was built by royal skilled craftsmen, comparable to Prasat Phanom Rung while the name of Prasat Muang Tam is understood to be called later by referring to the high land of Phanom Rung since the word “Muang Tam" means low or flat areas.
Feature
—- (fragments) —— At the back row pagoda on the north side, it is an image of Phra Kritsana (avatar of Vishnu) elevating Khao Khowatna; at the front row pagoda on the south side, it is an image of Indra in the attitude of Mahalilasatsana (sitting with knees up) above Kala face; and at the front row pagoda on the north side, it is an image of Shiva with Phra Uma sitting on Nandi in the attitude of Uma Mahesuan.
Naga Bridge
It is a walkway adorned with 35 pillars called Sao Nang Rieng on each side with the top shaped similar to lotus buds, along to Naga Bridge built in shape like the 5-headed, based on the cross plan of raised floor The bridge was created under the belief of the path between the human world and the gods’ world. The center of the bridge is enshrined with an 8-petal-flower petroglyph which may refer to the eight gods in the Hindu religion and is a site for worshipers to pray and make a wish. From the first floor to the top of the hill, there are 52 steps provided while the balcony arch on the east side is on on the 2nd floor of the bridge. The balcony consists of the rectangular connected rooms surrounding the area, but you cannot walk through the rooms as they are blocked by the walls. There is a cross-shaped arch on the pediment of the east-facing balcony while a petroglyph of the hermit is located outside representing the Shiva in the attitude of the therapist or probably referring to Narentharatit, who built the principle building.
History
Although Prasat Muang Tam is set on a flatland, its elaborate layout is based on the Khmer religious place construction concept of the central universe core related to sacred places, which is still important to the community until the present. Moreover, with the physical properties of Prasat Muang Tam including the flatland and abundant soil from the volcanic ash which is suitable for cultivation, it shows that the community on the plateau at the foothill of Khao Rung Phanom is large and important.
