According to the Brahmin tradition since the ancient times, it is believed that the city pillar ceremony must be held for auspiciosness for the city that is going to be constructed. Thailand was influenced by this belief as well. Another crucial city pillar shrine in Thailand is Nakhon Si Thammarat City Pillar Shrine which is situated in the north of Sanam Na Mueang Public Park, Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. It is a respectable sanctity that protects and keeps the city peaceful and is highly-revered by Nakhon Si Thammarat people.
When you walk inside, you will find out that this venue is composed of 5 buildings. The middle building enshrines the city pillar which is designed to resemble Srivijara arts called Hemarat Lela Style with the tetrahedron prang top, extended porches on the 4 sides and 3-tiered spired roofs. It is exquisitely decorated with stucco patterns including a couple of chicken sculptures standing at the staircase, the 5-head Naga hood at the handrail and patterns adorned on the buildings. Once you are inside, you can light incense sticks and candles to worship the city pillar first. There will be incense stick pots in front of the entrance. Then walk inside to where the city pillar is enshrined. The city pillar is made of iron wood. There are several myths about its sacredness covering Jatukham Rammathep, the city deity on the pillar top and there are other stories that amaze the people in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Moreover, the inside contains the pictures of Somdet To Phrommarangsi and Luang Pu Thuat including other Buddha images.
The other 4 small buildings around Thaksin Field have the same architectural style with the middle building. They are considered the 4-direction retinues called Chatu Lokkathep Shrine composed of Phra Sua Mueang, Phra Song Mueang Shrine, Phra Phrom Mueang Shrine and Phon Bandan Mueang Shrine. Additonally, the inside of each vihara enshrines the 4 Bodhisattva; Phra Amita Phra Phut, Phra Amoka Sitthiphut, Phra Akso Phayaphut and Phra Rattana Samphawaphut. Some viharas may also have Jatukham Rammathep. The entrances of these 4 viharas face towards the City Pillar Shrine. The area for lighting firecrackers for the rituals is provided nearby.
For travelling, you can take Highway No.401 along the sea coast to Nakhon Si Thammarat City, pass the Fountain Roundabout-Sanam Na Mueang Public Park and turn right to reach the City Pillar Shrine.
