Description
To think of the one and only thing in Thailand which is also considered Unseen Thailand, there are a few places that people literally know about. Loha Prasat (Metal Castle) is one of the priceless architecture which is the first and only one in Thailand and the third one in the world. The first one is in India. The second one is in Sri Lanka. Both metal castles have already collapsed. If you have a chance to pass by Ratchadamnoennern Road at night, you will see the luminousness from the castle that metaphorically refers to the light of faith.
Wat Ratchanatdaram Worawihan is a temple from the early Rattanakosin period, located near Pom Mahakan next to Royal Pavilion Mahajetsadabadin which is the residence for accommodating state guests. At present, it is also the enshrinement place for the monument of Krommuen Jetsadabadin which was later King Rama III.
Once inside the temple, you will see “Phra Ubosot” (ordination hall) with traditional Thai-style decoration i.e., the roof is adorned with Chofa (gable apex), Bai Raka (a leaf-shaped roof-edging) and Hang Hong. It differs from the adjacent Wat Thepthidaram which has Chinese art patterns. The ordination hall is the home to Phra Phuttha Settha Tamamuni which means the greatest Buddha above all the priests in the world. Its walls are painted with the fine Thep Chum Num pattern and astronomical stars. The north of the ordination hall is the location of the vihara, a building with hip-roof structure. In the south, the teaching hall is situated. It is a tall building that is similar with the vihara. Inside, the gilded standing statue of King Nangklao of the same size and same manner with the statue in Prasat Phra Thep Bidon in the Grand Palace is placed at the front. The 3 buildings are lined up from the north to the south. Furthermore, another important venue in the temple is Loha Prasat which was built in the reign of King Rama III, took 160 years for construction and restoration and completed in the reign of King Bhumibhol Adulyadej or King Rama IV. The castle is seemingly a 3-storey castle from the outside but actually has a total of 7 floors. The castle has 37 tops and apertures in the middle. Entry is free of charge. For foreign tourists, the admission fee is 20 baht. You can buy flowers, incense sticks and candles to pay homage at the front. The ground floor showcases Loha Prasat Exhibition explaining the construction, background and interesting information including a peaceful corner for those who want to calm their minds. In the middle of Metal Castle, there are winder staircases which is a one-way route, either up or down. The upper floors have terraces where you can come out to view the surrounding beauty and practice meditation. The top of the castle is home to the Buddha’s relics for you to worship and you can also see the 360-degree panoramic view of the area around Rattanakosin Island.
Wat Ratchanatdaram Worawihan is located on Maha Chai Road, Bowon Niwet Sub-District, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok. You can travel there by BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin Station and take Exit 2 to Chao Phraya Express Boat Pier. Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang, then either take a taxi or a tuk-tuk to Wat Ratchanatdaram which is adjacent to Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall.
