History
The Traditional Community Revitalization and Sustainable Management Project of Koh Lanta was founded on the intentions of the people in Koh Lanta, government agencies in the area, the Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and volunteers who came to the community during the tsunami. The budget has been supported by the United Nations Development Program. Revitalization of the way of life, house repair, boat repair, occupation restoration, as well as restoration of the traditional way of life of the Lanta people, including Thai, Chinese, Muslim, Buddhist and sea folk (Urak Lawoi) are the main task focusing on the people in the community as the core development. It provides a community organization to implement a self-development plan, including participation in the management of natural resources together with government agencies in order to preserve precious natural treasure, traditions, and folk culture for later generations and visitors. Around mid-2005, all concerned parties agreed to establish Koh Lanta Community Museum by renovating the building of the Koh Lanta District Office built in the reign of King Rama V and used as a district office from 1901 to 1998, totaling 97 years. The place was renovated to be a source and center for learning the history of the Lanta community from the Malay Islands to Koh Lanta and it began to improve in 2006.
