Description
Bangkok is full of notable and ancient temples that are both famous and well-known in the community. However, there is one important beautiful temple that many people don’t know about. It is Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram Ratcha Wara Maha Wihan which is the royal monastery of King Rama V and King Rama VII. Wat Ratchabophit is a monastery with proper and perfect layout. The beautiful architecture inside the monastery comes with high honor as the royal monastery of the two reigns.
For Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram Ratcha Wara Maha Wihan, King Chulalongkorn was pleased to build this temple and establish it as the first class Royal Monastery of Ratachaworawiharn of his reign. There are a considerable number of places inside the monastery such as the ordination hall with authentic Thai architecture with gilding stucco pattern on the outside. The door panels of the ordination hall are the mother-of-pearl inlaid door panels depicting the royal insignia. Phra Phuttha Angkirot is enshrined inside the ordination hall. Under the base of Phra Phuttha Angkirot Buddha throne, the relics and ashes of the 6 kings are contained. The interior design compounds the influenced Thai architecture. The top of the wall is painted with the green crow’s eggs color which is the birthday color of King Rama VII. The walls between the windows have the Unalome, alternating with the provincial seal of the King Rama V reign. Some people might wonder why the monastery does not have Bai Sema (boundary stones which designate the sacred area for the ordination hall). In fact, Bai Sema of the ordination hall is on the temple walls in 8 directions to indicate that the monks can perform the religious rituals anywhere within the monastery.
Wihan Luang Ratchabophit is located opposite the ordination hall. The exterior is decorated in genuine Thai style. The doors are engraved with the royal insignia patterns. The Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara called Phra Prathip Warothai is enshrined in the royal vihara. The interior decoration of the royal vihara is similar to that in the ordination hall. The only difference is the interior color, pink, which is the birthday color of King Rama V. Another place which is significant and different from the other temples is the Royal Cemetery where the relics and ashes of the royal consorts, royal family, royal relatives including Chao Chom and Chao Chom Manda of King Rama V are contained and placed. The decoration is a combination of Thai architectures. The Royal Cemetery is open-air with shady trees. Visitors can enter to pay respect to the relics and ashes as well as study the biography of all the royal consorts, royal family, royal relatives including Chao Chom and Chao Chom Manda of King Rama V.
Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram Ratcha Wara Maha Wihan is located on Ratchabophit Road, Ratchabophit Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok. If you come by car, you can park your car beside the monastery. For buses, there are many available bus lines such as Bus No.1, No.25 and No.507.
