Description
Local wisdom is amazing. Other than the astonishing architecture of the great and wonderful Phanom Rung, a mysterious calculation on the date and time for the sunlight, shining through the 15 doorways in different seasons four times a year, is incredible.
Phanom Rung Historical Park or Prasat Phanom Rung is on an extinct volcano. This Hinduism, Sivaism religious place was reconstructed since 15-18 Buddhist era. It was built from pink sandstone and located on the peak of Phanom Rung. In short, Rachenvarman II played an important role in constructing the temple on Phanom Rung Mountain in order to offer Siva during 15-16 Buddhist era. Later, Jayavarman VI donated the land and sent some servants to Phanom Rung. In 17 Buddhist era, Narentrathit, a royalty of Mahitarapura who ruled over the land (which belong to the ancestor of Suriyavoraman II, who built Angkor Wat), established this Prasat and practiced yogi here.
Feature
The particulars and scheme of Prasat Phanom Rung are in linear design and centered-focus. The Prasat faces to the east allowing the sunlight shines through the lingam inside the Prasat and get through the doorway on the other side. This circumstance occurs four times a year; the sunrise is in April and September while the sunset is in March and October.
History
Prasat Phanom Rung is a place to venerable in Hinduism, Sivaism that was reconstructed during 15-17 Buddhist era constantly. In 18 Buddhist era, Jayavaraman VIII of the Angkor Empire changed to Mahayana Buddhism, so this place became the temple for Mahayana. Prasat Phanom Rung was built from pink sandstone and located on the peak of the Phanom Rung Mountain, 1,320-feet above sea level. Phanom Rung, referring to the enormous mountain, was assumed to be built during the 15-18 Buddhist era. The inscribes reading and interpreting by scholars illustrated that Rachenvarman III, the King of Phra Nakorn (B.E. 1487-1511) established the shrine on Phanom Rung Mountain in order to offer to Siva. After that, Jayavarman VI donated the land and sent some servants to Prasat Phanom Rung.
