History
When King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit visited Phakphai Village, A. Fang, Chiang Mai Province, they passed Doi Angkhang and saw the hill tribes planted opium to earn the living. However, they were still poor and continued to destroy the forest and water resource, which is the important source of ecosystem. He mentioned that this was the moderate sloping area with cold weather where people grew opium, and there were less forest areas. He knew that the hill tribes earned money from opium-growing as much as from local peach-growing. In addition, he realized that Temperate Fruit Plants Experiment Station of Kasetsart University conducted the experiment on grafting peach, so he donated 1,500 baht from his personal budget to buy the land and farms at Doi Angkhang from the hill tribes. Then, he established the Royal Project in 1969 (B.E. 2512) as an experiment station to grow cold weather plants such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers as a pilot project for the hill tribes to earn their living. Prince Bhisadej Rajani was appointed as a President of the Royal Project. Later, King Rama IX royally named it “Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang”.
